The Mindanao Cattle Research and Development Project (MCRDP)

OBJECTIVES:
- To attain genetic independence for sustainable beef and dairy production
- To accomplish genetic improvement by breeding selected native heifers or cows by artificial
insemination using frozen semen from certified purebred Miniature Hereford bulls imported from the USA
METHODOLOGY:
Line breeding, outcrossing and bull selection to develop a new foundation herd of small beef type cattle
-24 heads of Philippine native heifers were used in this study
-They were artificially inseminated with frozen semen from
Hereford breed (frozen semen were donated by Dr. Felix from
the USA on March 14, 2011
RESULT:
- First successful progenies from Al was in 2014, was continued throughout the year
- In 2016, 16 or 24 heifers gave birth to 16 calves (F1s) = 8 males:8 females
- F1s were bred among each other
- 2018 - Last known herd size was 57 heads inclusive of the original
24 native cows (4 were culled)
